It can be quite a challenge to create a resort that suits business and leisure travelers alike, but Chula Vista Resorts impressive mix of amenities has managed to do just that. In fact, the business guest to leisure traveler ratio has been around 50-50 in the past year at this Wisconsin Dells, Wis., resort, says CEO Mike Kaminski.
Owned and operated by the Kaminski family for more than 50 years, Chula Vista has undergone some large-scale renovations in recent years. Lost Rios, an 80,000-square-foot, indoor waterpark, opened in July 2006. We created Lost Rios with the intention that it would [feature] some of the more extreme ride mixes in indoor waterparks today, Kaminski says.
Themed as a lost Mayan city, the park features more than a dozen water slides, an action river, a childrens pool and the Mount Montezuma rain forest play structure, which includes a 264-gallon tipping bucket. Adventurous guests also can experience the Flyn Mayan indoor water coaster.
The property includes the Pesos O Plenty Arcade and the Adventure Lagoon. This 120,000-square-foot outdoor waterpark features a wave pool, rental cabanas, a toddler pool and 10 water slides. New for 2008 is The Cyclone, a vortex-style water slide.
Guests who come to Chula Vista on business are treated to an equally generous mix of convention and meeting space. A 25,500-square-foot addition, completed in 2006, brought the total space to 80,000 square feet, which includes two large ballrooms with a riverfront view, and space for a 450-booth trade show. Additionally, a new 160,000-square-foot sports facility, scheduled for completion in early 2010, will be able to handle regional sporting events and larger conventions.
Sports have always been a big part of the Chula Vista experience. The Coldwater Canyon 18-hole golf course recently underwent a $2 million redesign. And Kaminski and his team currently are at work on an extreme sports nature park, which will utilize the propertys landscape.
Finally, no resort would be complete without top-quality dining options and accommodations. Here, the signature option is Kaminski Bros. Chop House, or there are dinner cruises on the Wisconsin River that depart right from the Chula Vista docks. Lodging options include themed suites, golf villas and condominiums.
In developing his resort and adding new amenities, Kaminski says his strategy has been to focus on quality rather than quantity, and to work in harmony with the natural beauty of the place. Chula Vista includes a riverfront walk that winds all the way into town.
Exceeding customers expectations is our No. 1 goal, Kaminski says. We [strive] to do things at the Disney-quality level. We may not be the biggest, but more than 35 percent [of visitors] return more than once a year.
