With the addition of MagiQuest, the first such live-action adventure game at a resort, and Scooops Kid Spa, Great Wolf Resorts has found two unique ways to go above and beyond the standard waterpark resort fun.

Great Wolf Resorts currently operates the Blue Harbor Resort in Sheboygan, Wis., and 10 Great Wolf Lodges, with another scheduled to open next year in Concord, N.C. Each facility features a family-friendly atmosphere and an indoor waterpark with a North Woods theme.

Currently, MagiQuest is available at all Great Wolf Resort properties except in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., and Sandusky, Ohio. Scooops is open at all properties except Sandusky.

The idea for MagiQuest developed through a relationship with Creative Kingdom Inc., says Kim Schaefer, COO of Great Wolf Resorts.

Created to appeal to guests of all ages, MagiQuest is an interactive, three-dimensional, Renaissance-themed fantasy game. As with traditional video games, players complete quests, accumulate powers and proceed to higher levels. The difference is that they’re not confined to a screen, and some quests can only be completed with teamwork.

The key is players’ magic wands, which are high-tech controllers that enact play by signaling simple “magic” effects, including opening treasure chests, winding clocks and creating music. The wands can store player’s quests for continued play later on during their visit, or on a return stay.

Schaefer credits her 13-year-old daughter with the idea for Scooops Kid Spa. Every Scooops offers ice cream-themed services such as the Scooops Facial or Chocolate Brownie Pedicure or Manicure. Though geared for all kids, Schaefer says Scooops is definitely most popular with the tween girl set. Services feature the Me! Bath line of spa products, and perhaps the signature indulgence is the Gummy Worm Pedicure or Manicure. This treatment includes a chocolate ice cream fizz soak with real gummy worms to tickle toes or fingers, and chocolate body icing to moisturize dry skin.

Adding to the experience, the ice cream shop-themed décor includes whimsical wall murals, retro swivel stools and an ice cream sundae-shaped pedicure sofa.

In developing both amenities, Schaefer says her goal was to create a quality experience for families, with lots of unique options. “[We strive to] provide the best experience in indoor waterpark resorts,” she adds. “[These amenities] are just another brick in the foundation.”
